With new products arriving daily, companies are needing to separate themselves from the competition to increase product sales. To reach targeted audiences, companies must attempt to tap into the emotional appeal of a product.

They tap into that emotional appeal through images and selective text, creating the structure of the advertisement, ad analysis essay. In the first advertisement for Pantene, found in People Magazine, Selena Gomez in her white dress is the center image.

The background behind her is light gray Pantene bottles and orange Pro-V, like polka-dots or confetti. The right half shows an image of a few gray colored Dove products against a gray background, getting lighter behind the bottles. Who are the target audiences of these advertisements?

One could argue the Pantene advertisement is marketing to lower and middle class young women because Selena Gomez is in that age group, and Pantene ad analysis essay not very expensive to purchase. This targeted audience wants clean, strong, beautiful hair at the fraction of the cost of a higher priced brand like Aveda.

This group of people that Pantene is trying to reach desires the luxurious feel of an expensive shampoo at a less expensive price. Selena Gomez apparently is chosen for this advertisement because she is a celebrity and if her hair can look beautiful on a budget then the advertiser is hoping the targeted audience who have limited budgets will feel the same way.

The emotional connection to feeling good about themselves and looking like a celebrity is the reason Pantene is hoping the buyer will feel compelled to purchase their product. However, ad analysis essay, the idea of strength seems to be covered in other ways. Part of how Pantene shows their message of strength is by making the image of Selena very large and center of everything.

In addition, ad analysis essay, bold black lettering is strong. The overall white color in the advertisement gives the appearance of an angelic, powerful and heavenly figure.

With one hand on her hip and the slightest hint of a smile, Selena Gomez shows an attitude of confidence and strength ad analysis essay well. All of these things emphasize the campaign Pantene has going here. The way that Pantene has presented a show of strength in this advertisement helps them grasp the attention of consumers.

Someone who is not a Pantene user but a fan of Selena Gomez will be likely to look at this bold advertisement and make the association between Pantene and their celebrity icon. By including a celebrity who is a Latina, they have broadened their audience to include their community as well. To me this Pantene advertisement appears powerful and evokes a sense of authority. In contrast to the Pantene advertisement, the Dove advertisement targets middle class men who are in their 30s or older, particularly fathers.

The image of the dad and baby emphasize that care and the use of Dove also depicts men as strong. If a man can take care of a baby, they can take ad analysis essay of their hair. Many men and fathers can relate to this, and it compels them to purchase the product. The plus sign symbolizes that strength they talk about. In addition, the idea that caring for your hair is strictly feminine becomes myth. Hair care ad analysis essay be masculine as well. A father is a large authority figure in a home, and an authority figure is seen as strong and powerful.

That role of a father, however, demonstrates that strength as more than appearance. A father shows strength through is caring aspect of his personality. This the whole idea Dove uses in their advertisement with ad analysis essay image of the father and baby. Now, is there an advertisement that is more effective than the other? This is tough. At least in my opinion, there is no real winner. They are both very effective and did their job.

If I were older and at the motherhood stage in life, I can honestly say I might purchase those products for me or my husband, ad analysis essay. They drive sales, ad analysis essay. In these two advertisements, we see different approaches to the same idea. These two approaches are based on the target audience. Pantene uses a female celebrity that a lot of women look up because they want to appeal to young women.

However, ad analysis essay, the common theme is there for a reason. Regardless of gender, every person has similar universal desires. Share this: Twitter Facebook.
